Christmas is the greatest festival of the christians. It is celebrated on the 25th of December every year. It is celebrated in the memory of the day on which Lord Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem , near the present day Jerusalem in Israel. All the Christians celebrate this festival with great devotion and loyalty.

Great Preparations are enthusiastically made for this sacred festival. All the houses and churches are cleaned and whitewashed. The walls of the buildings are attractively decorated with various paper flowers, pictures and so on. The shopkeepers who sell christmas presents also decorate their shops beautifully. People prepare different types of electric bulbs to illuminate their private buildings and holy places.

The Christmas Tree is one of the most popular traditions associated with the  celebration of Christmas. In order to prepare the Christmas Tree, people cut the big branch of a tree and plant it at a corner of the house. It is attractively decorated with different things such as flowers, dolls, toy birds and so on. Candles and electric bulbs are lighted on its branches. Joyful hymns known as carols are sung in groups around the Xmas tree.

At Christmas night all the  family members and invitees offer prayer to God believing in his grandeur. Christmas crackers explode and Christmas cards are widely distributed with wishes and greetings. Children are given gifts of various kinds. Santa Claus, a legendary jolly old man with white beard and red suit, is supposed to bring presents to children. In many countries the custom of lighting the tree, singing carols around it, and opening presents is celebrated on December 24, the Christmas Eve.
