India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is also called Bharat, Hindustan and Aryavart. It is the seventh-largest country by area and with more than 1.3 billion people, it is the second most populous country as well as the most populous democracy in the world.

It is bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast. India has a coastline of about 7500 miles (12400 kilometers) and borders Pakistan to its west; Bhutan, China and Nepal to its northeast; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to its east. India has been politically divided into 29 States and 7 union territories with its capital being New Delhi.These states and territories are further subdivided into districts and further into smaller administrative divisions.

India’s independence Day is celebrated on 15th August, marking the date when India separated from Britain in 1947. India is known by Bharat and Hindustan and the people of India are known as Indians.The majority of its people speak Hindi, while others speak other languages native to their regions or states.
